| Interesting note on the use of "gringo" in South America, in North America Mexicans use it exclusively for people they think are from the US, in Spain they favour "Yankee" which I've found rendered as "Yanqui" in Cuban and Nicaraguan propaganda. My assumption was "gringo" originated in Mexico. "Griego" is Greek in Spanish, sometimes used as in English to refer to something not understood, but there is no colloquial reference to foreigners as "griegos" (unless they actually were Greeks). |
