| The "Protecting Marriage" section of the 2004 Republican (Bush) platform says clearly that "legal recognition and the accompanying benefits afforded couples should be preserved for that unique and special union of one man and one woman which has historically been called marriage." Thus the Bush platform says that the Constitution ought to be amended so that states have no right to allow civil unions.
Young, you are, however, correct in that, when told during a television interview what his platform says, Bush said that his platform was wrong. Bush said that civil unions should be allowed, but didn't happen to agree with the party platform he approved. Young, you like your hero, Bush, serve no one better than the Author of Confusion. You are for states' rights but you are also in support of a party that is against the rights of states to decide to recognize civil unions. Eight of the eleven state measures against gay marriage also prohibit domestic partnerships.
If you and I both pray that God's will be done on earth as it is in heaven, and if Jesus is correct when he says that there is no marriage in heaven, why is barring civil unions or marriage of people like me and my partner of nearly thirty years so important to you? I see you and the great host of self-righteous as so distracted by things that are not your business or that are of lesser importance you can't tell when progress is being made and when it is not. If you believe that the basis of the right way is to do unto onthers as you would have done unto yourself, don't you think it would be good to be clear rather than confusing?
Jesus praises a man who comes to him and tells Jesus what he intends to do about the wrong he has done to others. Don't you think your Bush did wrong to approve of a platform that he later said was wrong because it would deny the right of states to recognize civil unions. Bush admited that his platform was wrong and said that he didn't agree with it, but he offers no help to those who may be wronged as a result of his lack of integrity. He didn't even apologize for the confusion he himself caused. |
