Mugged
Date Posted: May 2, 2008 at 07:37 am - Comments (1)
Since no good deed goes unpunished I just got mugged a few hours ago.

I was trying to get my friend home after some random dudes called me and said they were going to leave her on the side of the road. I rushed to her aid all the while the guy on the phone is informing me of how they could have done this or that if they were jerks almost loosely threatening that they were essentially going to sexually assault her. Anyway I get there and get her in my car.

I take her back to her place, try and get her out of her car while she's trying to sprawl out and refuse to move. While I'm worrying about this, I get jumped from behind. Completely different guy unrelated to the ones from earlier. Guy gets my wallet while I'm spinning around to defend myself. Pops me another time in the right eye, shattering my glasses. I start to fall not from any pain but simply the disorientation of suddenly being blinded. Still I manage to get my Judo grips on his hoody as I fall taking him slightly off balance. He winds up to hit me again actually taking 3 or 4 shots at the air, but I manage to put a triangle on him. He gags a bit and starts to stand up out of it, but I half-sweep, half-strong "leg" him onto the ground. The moment he hits the ground, I sit up, hit him in the face with a strong left, recover my wallet, and he takes off running leaving me to try and retrieve what I can of the glasses.

My wallet was $30 lighter but otherwise fine. Me and my drunken friend were also fine though she doesn't even know any of this happened.

Like I started this post... No good deed goes unpunished.

I'll probably revise my writing a little later to be more coherent when I've had some rest and my mind is more coherent.

Earthquake

So it's about 4:58 and I just got woken up by an Earthquake. Early reports are it was a 5.4. Definitely something I've never been through before.

More as it becomes available.

Judicial Affairs

So a few years ago I was railroaded by my university's fake court when I pissed off the hall director of my dorms. I presented a pretty convincing case (I should have. I spent 3 months preparing it) and still was found "In violation" of a whole laundry list of fake charges. I appealed to every possible individual finally reaching the President of the University who overturned the entire thing and expunged my record. The Dean of Students didn't have her contract renewed the following year over this issue.

So fast forward to this year and I heard that they were taking applications for Justices for the same board. Being the smartass I am, I applied... and was subsequently ACCEPTED!

Still, despite being on the board all year, I only just recently sat on my first case.

I can't be terribly specific since I swore an oath (read: Promised) not to. However, the end result was that of 9 justices, the 3 Criminal Justice (Law Enforcement and Corrections) majors including myself dissented because we didn't feel there was enough evidence. The 6 justices who, not only found him in violation, but threw the book at him, I believe were Poly-Sci majors. I find this humorous because people in Law Enforcement and Corrections are typically conservative leaning and people in Poly-Sci are typically Liberal leaning and it was the Criminal Justice majors who were fighting against a "Hang-em-high" outcome.

I suppose that Criminal Justice - Poly-Sci dichotomy proves true for me as well since I majored in Criminal Justice and minored in Political Science and find myself more moderate with conservative leanings.

Crysis, the System Killer
Date Posted: Jan 30, 2008 at 11:28 pm - Comments (0)
So I have a three / four year old computer.

Specs when I got it.

AMD 64 3700+ San Diego build socket 939
1 gig Corsair ram
MSI K8N Neo4 Motherboard
Sapphire X800 256 ultimate

Anyways, up until Bioshock, I could play anything released. Hell, even with the right cracks I could play Bioshock no problem.

So for Christmas I replaced my video card with a Radeon HD 3870 512. My motherboard is old enough that it predates Crossfire/SLI technology.

According to the Crysis benchmark software I'm averaging 34 FPS on medium settings at 1024-768.

So I have a three and a half year old computer with a $200 upgrade playing the current "system killer" just fine. The only thing I'm even looking at upgrading is my ram just to make system processes run a little better.

My only dilemma with this is that I have 4 slots, with 2 of them being used at 512. What I wanted to do was replace the current ram with simply 2 1gig pieces of Corsair XMS so that I could transfer them into a new machine when I finally did upgrade. Well, my motherboard only accepts 184 pin ram, which is still available. I just simply can't find a newer motherboard that accepts anything below 240 pin ram. So in order to get newer ram I have to upgrade the motherboard, which means I also have to upgrade the CPU, which comes to a grand total of a lot more money than I'm willing to spend in upgrades when I really don't need them.

So I think my solution is to spend around $50 on the final two ram slots at 512. I'll feel a lot better about spending $50 and essentially throwing/giving it away later, than I would with $120+ ram.

I'm getting a little bit off topic.

My system at current prices...

Motherboard: $116.55
http://www.eworldsale.com/msi-k8n-ne...5753_2111.html
Processor: $80 (couldn't find it new)
http://www.bizrate.com/cpus_computer...d+64+3700.html
Ram: $59.99

Power Supply: $59.99
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16817371004
Single Graphics Card: $249.99 (price has actually gone up. I paid $210 for mine)
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814102713

Grand total of $556.52 for a Crysis capable PC provided you didn't buy a CPU, ram, power supply, or motherboard in the last 3 or 4 years...

Overhype much?
